Before we get started doing this there are a couple of things you should know first. Firstly, to get the TI-89 capabilities on your smartphone you will be needing an emulator that is capable of running the ROM file for it. A ROM file is basically an image of a read-only memory chip. It enables you to have the exact TI-89 software on your phone that you would have on your calculator itself. Before you start this tutorial it is extremely important that you understand that you cannot download the ROM image for a TI calculator that you do not own. You must own the TI-89 calculator or whatever other TI calculator you are trying to get on your android phone.
Getting the TI-89 On Your Android Phone
Step 1.
Now that we have that out of the way lets get started on the tutorial. The first thing you will need to do is head on over to the Google Play Store on your Android phone and download an emulator to run the TI-89 ROM image. After testing both the ‘Graph 89‘ and the ‘Wabbitemu‘ emulators out it seems that they both are high quality and have their advantages. This tutorial will focus on the Graph 89 TI-89 Android install but the apps are very similar and the install will work the same way on both of them.
Step 2.
Once you have installed one of the apps the next step is to get a ROM image for the TI-89 (or any other TI calculator ROM file that the app supports) onto your smartphone. There are two ways of doing this. The first way is to download the ROM image directly off of the Texas Instruments website. This is by far the easiest and least time consuming way. To do this head on over to the Texas Instruments ROM download page on your Android phone and select the ROM file you want to download. Make sure you remember which directory you downloaded the ROM file to on your Android phone. Alternatively, you could download the TI-89 ROM image on your computer and hook up your Android phone to it then transfer the file over. The second way to obtain the ROM image for the TI-89 is to create a ROM image for your own calculator but this is roundabout and not worth the effort. If you simply want to go this route anyway there are a few tutorials on how to do this and a quick google search will yield good fruit.
Step 3.
Once you have downloaded or ported your ROM file over to your Android phone open up the app and hit the back button to bring up the main menu as seen in the first image below. From this menu click on ROM Manager (Image 2) and and the click “Add ROM”. This will bring up the ROM selection dialog bog. Once this is up you must locate the place where you stored the file for your TI-89 calculator in your Android’s files and select it. Once you have selected it the ROM should install directly onto the app and you should be good to go!
